Organizational Address of the center in Scientific Articles and Resources:
Shiraz Transplant Center, Abu-Ali Sina Hospital, Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Shiraz, Iran.

Introduction:
Focusing on research and unifying the educational activity goals is the most important mission of educational institution and universities. The purpose of establishing research areas in universities and its subdivisions, is to help promoting the scientific and cultural level of higher education institutions in National and International arenas by providing an appropriate context for conducting fundamental and applied research. This department is responsible for overseeing all research activities of the center.

The research department endeavors to conduct competitive applied research according to the medical needs of the country with the help of faculty members, students and staff by setting up research policies and implementing various strategies.

The Research department, in collaboration with all faculty members and students, makes a planned effort to guide and support students and to provide an appropriate context for scientific and research activities.

Research Department Services

  • Policy making, planning and developing the scientific level and also conducting all research related activities in order to improve the research rank of the hospital.
  • Managing and overseeing the development and improvement of appropriate infrastructure for science production and research development.
  • Establishing the necessary structure for active participation of faculty members in research activities
  • Policy making, planning to guide and support higher education projects.
  • Policy making and planning to promote quantitative and qualitative factors of faculty members articles.
  • Policy making and planning to increase the productivity of research laboratories.
  • Managing and overseeing research projects and applying knowledge in the required areas of the country.
  • Supporting and developing hospital-specific research areas along the hospital’s scientific authority promotion.
  • Developing instructions for implementing research policies.
  • Approving research plans and projects in accordance with relevant regulations.
  • Holding research workshops for faculty members and sub-specialize assistants.
  • Collaborating in implementing the statistical consulting and statistical data analysis using Excel & SPSS application for dissertations and research projects.
  • Preparing and filing the CV of all faculty members and saving in the Database Center
  • HSR Council matters.
  • Coordinating meetings and sending expert letters and following them up.
  • Holing research council for reviewing research plans and research policy making in the hospital.
  • Submission of research projects and presenting a final report of research projects to the Deputy Head of Research and Technology of the University for reviewing and making final decision.

Research Affairs:
The research department tasks of the hospital is carried out by the research department personnel. Since this medical research training center is a subsidiary of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, the standard proposal of this university is used for any research project.
The applicants who are volunteer to participate in research projects at this center, could fill the forms in English or Persian and submit it to the research department of the center.
The request for a research project is submitted to the Research Council of the Center and, if agreed to, the proposal is submitted to the relevant referees and sent to Shiraz University of Medical Sciences Research and Technology Department after reviewing the refereeing process and making any necessary corrections.
A proposal is presented to the Ethics Committee of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences and after the researcher’s approval, can use the information of the center.

Research Center
Shiraz Organ Transplant Research Center is one of the active centers in liver, pancreas, kidney and bone marrow transplantation fields.
Research department has been working to improve the health and quality of transplanted patients’ life since 2002. During this time more than 600 articles have been published in prestigious foreign journals with a considerable number of ongoing research projects.

Research priorities

  • Cell therapy (hepatocytes, beta cells, keratinocytes, stem cells) for treating liver and gastrointestinal diseases, diabetes, burns, bones and joints.
  • Using regenerative medicine and tissue engineering to produce liver, skin and pancreas tissue.
  • Studying on various aspects of pathology, microbiology, clinical, immunology and molecular genetics with priority of solving problems of transplanted patients.
  • Immunotherapy in the treatment of transplanted patients and developing tolerance

  • Using cell therapy as a new method for treating patients with acute liver failure, diabetes, etc.

  • Presenting an amniotic membrane as biological dressing for ophthalmic, ear, nose and throat and also bedsore patients.

  • Performing cirrhotic cohort study in Shiraz University of Medical Sciences.

HSR Committee

Expanding research is one of the principles of developing countries and health care centers. Continuing the research and scientific development program of each center in the medical sciences field requires a purposeful and consistent planning for need-based research. In this regard, the Health System Research (HSR) has special role in identifying research needs of each center which also helps to improve the health and offered service status of each health center by showing their strengths and weaknesses. In this regard, the research activities bylaws of Abu-Ali Sina Hospital, hereinafter referred to as the hospital, are hereby announced.

Duties and scope of the Hospital Research and Technology Committee

  • Establishing and communicating hospital research priorities.
  • Reviewing and approving the presented plans in the hospital.
  • Monitoring the process of pended or accepted projects in accordance with providing hospital benefits in terms of research and legal.
  • Holding workshops to empower staff interested in research

Note 1: All investigators inside or outside the hospital with a research plan or clinical trial that somehow benefit from clinical and non-clinical information in the hospital, must submit a copy of their research proposal prior to initiating their study to the Hospital Research Committee to be allowed to operate in the hospital after reviewing the first hospital research session.

Note 2: The first author or the correspondent of the article must carefully review and sign the hospital research committee approved contract between him and the research department of the hospital prior to commencing the approved research plan. The hospital’s research committee is responsible for overseeing the performance of this contract and the legal responsibility for non-compliance with the contract is with the executors of the plan.

Note 3: Officials of the clinical and non-clinical departments of a hospital may only initiate necessary collaborations with hospital research project investigators, just after receiving approval from the hospital research committee. The hospital research committee is responsible for overseeing the performance of this contract and the clinical and non-clinical authorities are responsible for non-compliance.
